I took a few Guitar Lessons from Jimi Hendrix

Do you believe me? I’m the right age, born in 1953. He was born in 1942, so it could be true. Of course, they were private, in the flesh lessons, not online guitar lessons. It was not that big of a deal at the time. I already knew of him from BBC out of England. I knew he played backup for the Isley Brothers before he ventured out on his own.

I was taking guitar lessons from another private teacher when I ran into Hendrix at a guitar store in Wash DC the day before a concert, while his guitar was being set up. What a freak out. He was hanging and very friendly and talkative. Jimi seemed really honored that he was so impact-full on my life. That I wanted to emulate every note he made. That I understood every word he ever said.

He asked me to play some for him, so I played a little bit of Castles Made of Sand . Jimi told me that  he never took a lesson in his life and had no idea what he was doing theoretically. That he played his guitar all the time and experimented a lot. But he told and showed me about 100 times a couple of “things” he said he did. And he made sure I knew that it may take years of practice to “get it”.

I’m still in awe today. But I knew why he was in town back then. I already had my tickets to the concert at Wolftrap. He was the nicest guy in the world.
